STAFF BIO TREY THAMES

Trey came to ORBC in February 2022 to serve as Student Pastor (or as he calls it, Minister of Chaos). He continues to serve in this capacity, but also serves as the church’s Executive Pastor.

 

Trey is an experienced communicator with thirty-six years of ministry experience. In that time he has served as Student Pastor and Associate Pastor at several churches throughout the state of Texas.

 

He has also served as Campus Pastor and faculty at several private College Preparatory Schools. As faculty he taught Latin, Theology, Apologetics, World History, and Archaeology. He has also taught at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary’s undergrad college, teaching Old Testament Survey and Latin.

 

Currently, Trey is an adjunct professor (on rotation) teaching Latin at the Institute of Lutheran Theology in Brookings, SD.

 

Trey is a Corpus Christi native, but has served in churches and Christian academies in Corpus Christi and the Houston and DFW metroplexes.

 

Trey is married to his precious wife, Liz. They have been married since March 2019. Trey has a daughter, Madisynn Grace, who serves with a ministry in Colorado.

Trey earned a BA in Theology with a minor in Religious Education from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, TX.

 

He simultaneously earned two Master of Divinity degrees from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX and Logsdon School of Theology at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene, TX.

 

Trey has earned a Master of Arts in Biblical Archaeology and Biblical Studies from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Ft. Worth, TX.

 

He continued his studies in the  PhD program at SWBTS. He had been working on a PhD in Archaeology and Old Testament studies.

Trey has experience as an archaeologist having excavated for five seasons in the Middle East. He has excavated in Israel and Cyprus, serving on staff as a supervisor and excavation camp director with the Gezer Project and the Kourion Urban Space Project.

 

Trey served as the lead docent for the Dead Sea Scrolls and The Bible exhibit hosted by Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminar (July 2012-January 2013). Trey has shared with thousands of visitors the history and significance of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

 

Trey was also the Director of the Qumran Simulated Excavation Project, a supplementary component to the Dead Sea Scroll Exhibit. Trey used 80 tons of stone to rebuild a replica of the majority of the ruins of Qumran, the ancient site in Israel adjacent to the caves where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found. The site afforded guests the opportunity to experience Qumran as well as an archaeological excavation.

 

Guests were allowed to dig to find simulated artifacts as well as to find real pottery sherds from a site in Israel (Tel Jemmeh) excavated by the Smithsonian Institute.

Trey loves to cook and grill and does some catering.

 

His hobbies include restoring vintage cast iron skillets and playing cards and dominoes with his wife.

 

Trey has a love for sacred art (religious-Christian art) and music. He loves connecting with the ancient Church through it’s art and history.

 

Trey has a love for history, particularly Texas history, US history, European history, and biblical and Church history.
